Project 1

Our clients purchased this property in 2003 with a view to renovating the building and to clear the nearby lake to run a carp fishing business. After having planning rejected, they contacted Breton Build in the spring of 2007. We obtained the relevant planning by the summer of 2007 and started works in November 2007.

Firstly a road had to be built to the property and the fosse septic installed, then the temporary electric supply and water were connected and demolition works could begin. Openings for the doors and windows were made and an insulated concrete floor was laid; the new floor joists and roof followed, the garage foundations and floor was laid. The garage was constructed using concrete blocks with original stone from the site being used as an outer skin. The stairs, doors and windows were next to be fitted.

The internal walls were built and the electrics and plumbing installed; the customer carried out the plastering and decorating. The bathroom and kitchen were installed. The project was finished in March 2008.

Project 2

This property was purchased with a view to renovating the building into (where possible) a self-contained eco-friendly house with the installation of a rainwater management system and a wind turbine electricity supply. Once all the relevant planning had been obtained the works could commence. The property required the removal of the roof and a part of the front wall, openings had to be made and openings were enlarged for the other windows. Once the ground was cleared the fosse septic could be installed and the water and temporary electricity supply connected.

The front wall had to be removed due to subsidence and a window to the right of the property was incorporated into the rebuild. Once all the structural stonework was complete the floor joists could be fitted. The roof had to be stripped back to the A frames, new purlins were fitted and the dormers installed in the roof. The floor to the house had 75mm of insulation laid under the concrete to minimize heat loss through the floor.

All internal walls were constructed using thermalite blocks (breeze blocks) to assist with the insulation, the heating system is via a wood burning stove fitted with a back boiler supplying hot water and central heating. The roof space was double insulated using 16-ply foil insulation and 100mm of rock wool.

The windows and doors were manufactured locally to our design by menuiserie S.A.R.L Denoual Thierry based in Saint-Brandan to our design, the windows had tilt and turn features built in. Once these were fitted by Thierry, the internal works could commence. All walls were plastered and decorated. The stairs, kitchen and all internal doors, including architraves and skirting boards, were manufactured and fitted by Thierry.
