Project 2
This property was purchased with a view to renovating the building
into (where possible) a self-contained eco-friendly house with the
installation of a rainwater management system and a wind turbine electricity
supply. Once all the relevant planning had been obtained the works
could commence. The property required the removal of the roof and
a part of the front wall, openings had to be made and openings were
enlarged for the other windows. Once the ground was cleared the fosse
septic could be installed and the water and temporary electricity
supply connected.
Project Pics
The front wall had to be removed due to subsidence and a window to
the right of the property was incorporated into the rebuild. Once
all the structural stonework was complete the floor joists could be
fitted. The roof had to be stripped back to the A frames, new purlins
were fitted and the dormers installed in the roof. The floor to the
house had 75mm of insulation laid under the concrete to minimize heat
loss through the floor.
All internal walls were constructed using thermalite blocks (breeze
blocks) to assist with the insulation, the heating system is via a
wood burning stove fitted with a back boiler supplying hot water and
central heating. The roof space was double insulated using 16-ply
foil insulation and 100mm of rock wool.
All walls were plastered and decorated. A wood shed was added in spring
2010; this was designed and built by a newly qualified carpenter from
Germany on a 4 month placement (thanks Felix)
